Driving home on one of the wettest days yet last week, and finally having had enough of the xx's debut album (strangely the only CD that will play in my car that has been on repeat for months), I managed to catch the end of Marika Hackman's brand new single Drown getting its Zane Lowe premiere. Soundtracking the deepest of blue skies to dramatic effect as the last of the light slowly faded, her latest effort couldn't have been timed better. It's dark yet enticingly beautiful rays of softly plucked guitar strings affixing your every attention, drawing you forever deeper in to their transfixing spell. "To suffocate in your smoke, I'd choke on you if I could, Maybe I will" isn't the most uplifting of lyrics but then again Marika has never been one for shying away from the grittiness in pop, and that's we so love about her.
Drown is taken from Marika Hackman's forthcoming debut album 'We Slept At Last' set for release 16th February 2015 through Dirty Hit Records. Her single ‘Drown’ will preceed on 8th December 2014.
