Live Review: Two Door Cinema Club, Motorpoint Arena Cardiff 03/10/2019
As hurricane Lorenzo continues to make its unwelcome appearance, battering down on the UK, Two Door Cinema Club brought their own very own micro-climate to Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena. Still riding high from a summer of festival dates and the critical acclaim received from recent album 'False Alarm' the band have a spring in their step and tonight's show went to prove it with another clean and clinical performance.Seven years since their last visit to the city (has it really been that long), the band kicked off proceedings with Talk before taking the crowd on to trip down memory lane with Undercover Martyn, I can Talk, This Is The Life and Cigarettes in the Theatre. You'd forget this was a tour in support of a new record, yet no one could fault the hit packed, pop-perfected set-list. Theirs is a sound that's dominated the indiest of discos dancefloors up and down the county, their blueprint is one that's steeped in history and is now almost a decade old, yet tonight the track's sounded as fresh as the day they were cut.
Recent single Dirty Air becomes fully realised live with its empowering chorus and high tempoed melodies, as is the funkier side of the band with Bad Decisions as we get the full enjoyment from Alex Trimble's falsetto vocals. Spirits were in high dosage this evening, it's also his 30th which I'd imagine would be quite the surreal experience to have the whole crowd sing Happy Birthday back to you. A pint of Guinness each later and the candles blown out on his cake and things were back underway as the band launched in to What You Know with not a soul left standing still.
From their full use of dazzling epilepsy induced lights, the warm hued atmosphere's and hit after hit after hit made for an experience like no other. If anyone says guitar music is dead, they clearly haven't been to a recent Two Door Cinema Club show. Tonight's show exemplified just how fun they are.
