Charged up on 70's glam rock, Cardiff's The Family Battenberg show no signs of slowing down their impressive trajectory as they headlined a sold out Clwb Ifor Bach last night. With only a handful of songs online, the band have been grafting the live scene in recent years and have gone on to create an explosive buzz for themselves, something that speaks volumes with queues waiting to get in to their Swn Festival set this year as the room hit capacity even before they took to the stage.
And it's evidently clear just why as they wasted no time unleashing their guitar snarling hits as percussion rattled pint cups and their skippy basslines were quick to get the crowd moving.
Determined to fill every space of the room with their towering compositions the band cranked the noise up to 11 as recent single Rocket Dustbin's soft rolling drums quickly gave way to an energetic expulsion of thrashing guitar riffs and angsty vocals. Quite rarely does a band sound this animated off record but it's a field they thrive in and effortlessly achieve.
An impromptu Christmas singalong to Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody, joined on stage by the joyous Getdown Services, about sums up the night with moments of chaotic fun aplenty.
Through dynamic shifts in sound, the band charge through their high octane single's momentarily pausing to catch a breath. This ain't for the faint hearted. No biases, The Family Battenberg are proving to be one of the tightest, innovative band's to rise from the city in recent months and it's clear to see the adoration from fans as they sang back each and every word at the top of their lungs.
From monstrous build ups and intriguing lyrics that'll leave you bemused and scratching your head, the show must sadly end, but not without their popular single Fuzzy Features which solidifies their diversifying sound as scuzzy melodies and bubbling guitars inject a fresh take on garage/psych rock.
With plenty more track's up their sleeves, The Family Bettenberg continue to up the ante, backing up their acclaim. Where they go next is anyone's guess, but one thing's for certain, if their name's involved you can bet there'll be a commotion, and we're all for it!
