Live Review: Biig Piig - SWX Bristol, 26 February 2025

As the haunting refrain "I know you don't wanna be alone, cause no one does" echoed through the room, Irish singer-songwriter Jess Smyth, aka Biig Piig was quick to get the Bristol crowd under her spell as she took to the packed out SWX stage for a magnetising performance.

It takes real skill to deliver an effortlessly cool, genre-bending set that'll have fans swaying, singing, and dancing in equal measure, yet it's something the multi-dimensional artist took in her stride.

From the hypnotic ‘4AM,’ instantly pulling the crowd into her world, there, she seamlessly blended old favourites with tracks from her recent debut album 11:11, proving her ability to transition between soulful introspection and pulsating, dancefloor-ready beats with ease.

Standout moments included the euphoric ‘Roses and Gold,’ which had the entire venue moving as the band's bassist/saxophonist took centre stage for a blistering solo, where elsewhere an emotionally charged performance of ‘One Way Ticket’ offered a moment of calm as fans clung on to each and every guitar strum and vocal lull.

The chemistry between Biig Piig and her live band was undeniable, with the tight rhythm section adding warmth and depth to her signature lo-fi sound, as she bounced around stage with an almost manic excitement, it was clear to see just how much this meant as her smile beamed in to the eager crowd.

With the album offering nuances of youth, love, and self-discovery with its stunning production it was fascinating to see Biig Piig’s live band add a new dimension to her sound, with deep basslines and crisp drum patterns amplifying the weight of every beat. Her smooth vocal delivery, switching effortlessly between English and Spanish, brought a further richness and depth that recordings alone can’t quite capture.

Sadly though, all good things must come to an end, and with a lonely one track encore, the audience made sure they gave it everything they had as the entire crowd became swept up in the irresistible energy of the night. Biig Piig's performance at SWX Bristol not only highlighted her growth as an artist, but also underscored her unique ability to create an intimate atmosphere within a lively setting. Bristol won’t forget this one anytime soon.
